ESTABLISHMENT: In 2000, Phyllis Leyden-Alexander and Lynette Samuel accepted the challenge to conduct a LifeSkills program for Second Chance Women's Center, an out-patient program for substance abusers that provided services to help women overcome their addictions. LifeSkills for Women became the arm that provided small group sessions that included topics and activities that helped the ladies develop their soft job skills and creative abilities. These clients were both TANF and non-TANF recipients. LifeSkills expanded their outreach to the public sector and worked with agencies such as Public Housing, Section 8, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Richmond County Department of Family and Children Services, and others to bring their program to these residents and customers.

ORGANIZATION: Phyllis and Lynette continue to work with ladies transitioning from welfare to work. Their traditional and non-traditional topics, newsletter, curriculum, mentoring program, conference calls, and makeover sessions all work to bring hope, empowerment, and increased knowledge to program attendees.

CLIENTELE: Participants in the LifeSkills program have returned to school, gained employment, received promotions, and made lifestyle changes that lead to healthy living, and stronger families.

AFFILIATIONS: Today partnerships also include Augusta Partnership for Children, The Augusta Chronicle, and Augusta Urban Ministries.
